在Portal中数据主要分为两大类：Web内容与桌面内容。对于Web内容与桌面内容中的每个项目（item）又被具体分为maps，layers， styles， tools，applications，和 datafiles；
在web内容中，地图对应Web maps，图层对应不同的空间服务内容，工具对应不同的地理处理工具，应用程序对应各种各样的Web和制图应用，数据文件（datafile）对应可以发布为地理服务的内容。在桌面中，地图对应地图包和地图文档，图层对应图层包，工具对应地理处理工具和地址定位器包，应用程序对应add-in插件和其他扩展程序，样式对应桌面应用的样式文件，数据文件对应不同的切可以通过Portal分享的文件。每个项目（item）在Portal里都是有一个URL地址的REST资源。除了类型（type）和关键字（typekeywords），还包括标题，描述，标签和缩略图。如下表所示的是Portal所支持的数据类型。这些在调用添加资源（addItem）接口的时候会被要求加上指定的项目类型。类型关键字（type keywords）会被自动的加载到该资源上用于在系统中搜索该项目（item）。
