#ENCOUNTER PURE CHANCE#
STEP 1
What is the meaning ? (what can I do?)
chance≈- random
- no targeting
Also find the meaning of ‘chance’ in Chinese,it also means 'opportunity','fortune', 'possibility'.
Lastly,I'd like to choose the meaning of 'random' to express this topic.
- Based on a report I recently saw about ink painting research which was talked about use science and technology to analyze works of art.It is about how to evaluate and analyze the blank in WuGuanZhong's works. The team used computational significance models, eye-tracking experiments to show that the large amount of blank space in the works is not only a quiet background, but also deliberately set up to convey specific information and has an important impact on the audience's aesthetic experience.
Also the report talk about Visual Saliency. Many parts of Wu's work are vast, shapeless, endless, ever-changing natural phenomena such as the sky, clouds, rivers, lakes, or just a blank space without any particular phenomenon.
The results suggest that the human brain is able to pick up key points quickly in the first few quick glances.
SO I'd like to make some attempts to create a graph at random, whether it can be reminiscent of some images in traditional ink painting.
STEP 2
Research relevant art work online
- Rorschach test
Kind of Psychological tests,10 pure grey to black and uneven shade of color ink map. Each time he presented a picture to the subject, he was told to say what he saw in the ink.
- Cornelia Parker
capture momentary, unpredictable change, visible change
STEP 3
Choose materials
Prime,I prefer to use ink and I did some experiments with ink.
Then I thought maybe it would be more interesting if I replaced it with something else.
Soy sauce is a good choice.
Reason - more random
- a blend of Chinese culture and other countries(in Chinese traditional painting, they are always use ink, but soy sauce works in every country,it is like a combination)
About CARRIERS (There will be comparisons)
- rice paper
- sketch paper
STEP 4
test process
Use seagull feathers and plastic bags casually, spread soy sauce on the paper.
First I used ink,The resulting image reminds me of mountains and valleys.
Chaotic Landscape Painting,by Chen Mingjang,It is similar to my ink experiment to some extent
Then like I said before, soy cause is a good idea to replaced the INK
In the whole process, I did not deliberately want to create a specific image, just random coloring.
Here were the images at different times.Although there is no obvious difference, some tiny changes can be seen. The degree of rendering of soy sauce varies in different papers.

STEP 5
Compare
To me, they are similar in some ways. It is interesting When I first saw the resulting image, I thought of these traditional paintings. The large areas of color blocks and flowing lines.
Also, the resulting images are also random to each viewer because they are abstract, and each person's subconscious associations are different.
STEP 6
THINKING TIME
Although the formation of the final image is indeed random, it is difficult to achieve complete randomness in the process of real practice, and it is inevitable to choose my favorite materials or familiar ways. These are all personal habits, just as designers have their own design style, and despite some efforts to get rid of themselves, it's hard to be completely random. This is why for designers, innovation and breakthrough themselves is the most difficult, but also the most simple.
Hope I can always stay hungry for new things and keep pushing myself.
