I started my contribution journey to ASF in 2006 and have been a member for more than 10 years. I’m an active mentor of Apache Incubator. I have helped 10+ podling projects[1]. 2 years ago, I started the ALC(Apache Local Community) Beijing with an ambition to promote the Apache way and the Open Source culture in China. In fact, we've made quite a progress, in 2021, we (ALC Beijing) held ApacheCon Asia successfully.
If I were to be a part of the board team, I’d like to help the ASF to break the barriers caused by geography, culture, language.
Based on my mentor experiences with podling projects for 6+ years, I can tell these obstacles that stop Chinese developers from getting involved with the ASF.
When I talk to local developers, most of them are using ASF projects on a daily basis. On the contrary, only a few of them contributed back to the projects. It's not because they are not confident with their programming skills, it is mostly due to the culture differences. ASF somehow seems far from them. Reaching out to invisible, unfamiliar developers through email, created this insecure feeling spontaneously. Therefore, to bring these developers onboard, local mentorship and project meetups are crucial.
As a local mentor, I consider myself as building the bridges between ASF and the local community instead of merely offering the ASF mentorship to the podling project. I held the Apache committer Shanghai meetup in 2018[2] and 2019[3] when Craig, Roman and Justin visited China. It was a great opportunity for local Apache committers and potential podling projects to have direct conversations with the ASF officers. These meetups are extremely successful we exchanged a great deal of sophisticated thoughts on community building. These meetups benefited projects directly. One good evidence is that ShardingSphere and APISIX found their proper incubating mentors immediately after those meetups.
When I heard about the Apache Local Community plan from Community Dev. I suddenly realized there is so much more I could do. As more podling projects joined together to hold the colocated meetups in Beijing, I was triggered by the idea of building a local community. In this way, local open source enthusiasts could get together by hosting events, publishing articles, and making podcasts, etc. So I started the ALC Beijing in 2020[4], and helped to set up the ALC Shenzhen as a mentor[5]. By sharing ASF successful stories within the local community we inspired more developers, talented college students to join open source development.
Along With the community we can do more than I can imagine. Last year, ALC Beijing was honored to hold the ApacheCon Asia 2021[5]. With the countless support from sponsors, track chairs and volunteers, we managed to host the conference successfully. There were 140 sessions provided by nearly 200 speakers, 13 keynotes, 14 tracks in this conference. By the end of it, we attracted about 30.7k audiences to attend the meeting. By holding ApacheCon Asia 2021, ALC Beijing has made a big step in boosting the local awareness of ASF. I cannot describe how proud I am seeing everything started from scratch, and how grateful I am for the generous help and support I received.
ASF has always been a magnificent place for programmers to boost innovation in the Open Source world. I truly enjoyed my journey with ASF and want to bring it to the next level. It's a great honor to have been nominated and I look forward to serving the ASF from the BoD.
